Slater Mill hosts a free celebration of National Spinning and Weaving Week.
Join us on Sunday, October 3, 2010 from 12-5PM for an afternoon of fun with fiber!
Our annual Fall fiber event draws a variety of fiber artists and craftspeople including spinners, weavers, quilters, felters and knitters from different communities. Various Guilds will be pariticpating including the Industrial Revolution Quilt Guild, Rhode Island Spinners Guild, and the Slater Mill Knitting Guild. There will be demonstrations in these different disciplines, interactive activities for children, book signings, craftors, and vendors for all. Come to Slater Mill and watch the best spinners and weavers from our communities at work. Learn new techniques, meet other people in the community interested in fiber arts or simply enjoy the afternoon at our wonderful historic site on the banks of the Blackstone River.
This event is an opportunity for the fiber arts community to come together to get involved in the Community Guild Studios, a fine craft and fiber arts center for the people of Rhode Island and Southeastern New England – something which did not exist despite our state’s long and rich history of textile design and manufacturing. Housed in the new Jencks Education Center on the second floor of Slater Mill, this major initiative is unique in the country in that it links a National Historic Landmark and the birthplace of textile manufacturing with Rhode Island’s growing community of talented, professional craftspeople and the public.
Spin/Weave/Knit/Quilt Celebration is FREE and open to the public and will be held mostly outdoors. In case of inclement weather activities will be moved indoors to the Jencks Education Center on the second floor of Slater Mill.
Tours of the Museum are at regular admission prices.
